Violence Against Women Act of 2022: What does it do for Alaska Tribes?

Description:

Violence Against Women Act of 2022: What does it do for Alaska Tribes?

The law is important because it defines the territorial jurisdiction of an Alaska tribe. Instead of the usual reference of “Indian country” an Alaska tribe’s jurisdiction is the “village,” which means the Alaska Native Village Statistical area covering all or any portion of a native village … as depicted on the “tribal statistical area program verification map of the Bureau of the Census.”

The presentation will include a PowerPoint, and afterwards, a question-and-answer session. Also discussed will be the Chickaloon Tribal Police Department. The Tribal Police is a pilot program that other tribes may be interested in implementing.

Presented by: Lisa Wade, Executive Director, Nay’dini’aa Na’ Kayax (Chickaloon Village Traditional Council), Alaska, and Rick A. Haskins-Garcia, Pro tempore Judge, Chickaloon Tribe, Director of Law and Policy, Alaska Native Women’s Resource Center, Alaska
